Playlist 12: "Man, you're such an animal Chloe!"

This month, despite its busyness, Ei and I (rhyming skills) have decided to take a walk on the wild side, musically speaking, of course.

1. The Lovecats - The Cure
I like to mix up playlists with some old and some new and whilst this song came out in 1983 it still is an absolute classic of a song. It has a melody you can't get out of your head, a rhythm you can't help tap your feet to and the vocals are as wild as they name suggests. Absolutely timeless.

2. Guns and Horses - Ellie Goulding
If only I could marry her. Whilst not being my favourite song by Ellie G, especially after her new record company completely ruined it, its still a good song and deserves a mention. Ellie has a unique voice, mix that with syncy sounds and breathtakingly beautiful harmonies and you got someone who a start female (me) would go gay for.

3. Animal - Neon Tree's
Without lead singers Tylers Glenn's unique voice this song would be just drop of water lost in the massive ocean that is the indie rock and roll world. Luckily, they do have Tyler Glenn's voice... and his haircut, which frankly is a talking point in itself. They were only signed last year, but I think the future is very bright for them... neon in fact.

4. Hi Tiger! Stop Believing! - Hi Tiger
This song starts off beyond abstract, slow at first and then picks up, before launching into the electronic bliss accompanied by eerie oohs and ahhhs. Not very tiger-esque, but none the less brilliant.

5. I Hate Seagulls - Kate Nash
Straight off her brand new album 'My Best Friend Is You', is a song that completely contradicts the rest. After hearing most of the angsty, shouty rants, 'I Hate Seagulls' reminds me of the Kate Nash from the last album. That's not to say its bad, even though Kate's new angsty shouty rants are fucking awesome, albeit a little graphic.

6. The Daily Growl - Lambchop
Despite the bands odd name and the songs title, this song is classically elegant and doesn't really growl much at all. Despite my love of growling and my disappointment at its lack, its still a very pretty song. Awwww.

7. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Whilst you listen to this song imagine a car jumping a cliff in slow motion, its fucking awesome. This song is legendary and had to be included somewhere for the sheer amount of cool it will bring to your life. Don't worry, there is no need to thank me.

8. The Dog - Alessi's Ark
I have only one word for this song: ADORABLE. Enjoy.

9. Bird Bird In a Small Cage - Patrick Watson
Good olde Patrick knows a thing or two about creating great music. This song is metaphorically beautiful and Patrick's voice is delicate. Also- this guy has an amazing beard. I enjoy it.

10. Panther - White Flight
A song to swing your hips to. Its a little out there and you might not like it the first time you listen to, but its one of those songs that sneak up on you and you find yourself loving it. Beware of the wrath of this song.

11. White Rabbit - Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
From the Alice and Wonderland soundtrack and unlike the movie, this doesn't disappoint. With some epic guitar playing and subtle vocals, this song is like finding a wonderland.

Playlist 12: Animals

I have to begin this month’s playlist with a little announcement- we’ve decided to cut the playlist count down to 2 a month. We felt four was simply too many, and what with being busy with exams and such at the moment, 2 a month is a bit more flexible. So, this month, the playlist is being commandeered by Chloe and Eileen, and our theme is:

Playlist 12: Animals
Take a walk on the wild side

1. RILO KILEY- Portions for Foxes
To kick us off, a bit of indie-rock lovin’ courtesy of Rilo Kiley. After hearing this song on the first ever episode of Grey’s Anatomy, I had to get my hands on it. Hearing Jenny Lewis chanting ‘Baby I’m bad news, bad news, bad news’ always takes me back to my days of being an orange-haired burnout. Aaw.

2. YEAH YEAH YEAHS- Gold Lion
Seems a little obvious, but how could I not, really? This song is a classic in my books. I’m much more of a ‘Fever to Tell’ girl personally, but it’s impossible not to appreciate the sheer majesty of this song.

3. SIX GALLERY- Edie and the Marble Faun
Ok, so a faun is only half-goat, but after featuring them in the ‘April: A Memoir’ post, I felt like I ought to share a little more of Six Gallery’s wondrous sound with you. Unfortunately they’ve postponed their UK tour, due to losing Dan Francis as the vocalist. They’re training up a new guy, Daniel Erb (of Afortiori), but no news of rescheduling the tour has emerged yet.

4. ROLO TOMASSI- Seagull
A little bit of vintage Rolo Tomassi for you- y’know, back in the days they sounded like Super Mario on acid. Their new album- due out 24th May- is apparently very different to this. A dead giveaway of said difference is the fact it’s been produced by Diplo- yes, that is Diplo, producer of M.I.A and Snoop Dogg. Interesting...

5. BEDOUIN SOUNDCLASH- Trinco Dog
So far, we’ve had indie, math rock, and screamo/grindcore craziness- now I’m throwing a little reggae into the mix. Never say my musical tastes aren’t varied.

6. THE BEATLES- Blackbird
You’ve got to love The Beatles- even they can’t decide what their songs are about. Whether you think this song is about the plight of African-Americans, or ‘troubled girls in South America’ (McCartney’s words, not mine), or just a simple story about a classic underdog waiting for his moment to shine, at least we can all enjoy the simple peace of this beautiful song.

7. BILLIE THE VISION AND THE DANCERS- Summercat
A bit of Swedish indie pop silliness to put a smile on your face. I think what I like so much about this song is that anyone who’s ever missed anyone can instantly relate to the chorus of ‘Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, I want to be with you tonight’. Bless.

8. MISFITS- Return of the Fly
I think some people have this impression that music bloggers spend their entire life hunting down and listening to amazing tunes. Whilst it’s true that the best ones do seem to have a knack for spotting the next big thing, I for one have spent pretty much all of this month listening to 70’s horror-rockers Misifts- I’m completely hooked. This song is based on a comic book of the same name- Glenn Danzig, the lead singer, is pretty into his comic books, by all accounts. I think he owns a company who make erotic comic books, which is gross.

9. COCOROSIE- Noah’s Ark
Named as a major influence on The XX, Cocorosie are a female experimental duo, currently residing in Paris. The great thing about Cocorosie is that they are simultaneously really cute and really bizarre- their use of children’s toys in their music, for one, is both baffling and brilliant. They’re an acquired taste, but for those who get into them, it’s easy to see their own brand of subtle genius.

10. JONSI- Animal Arithmetic
Continuing the cuteness, a track from Sigur Ros front man Jonsi’s new album, ‘Go’. Fast-paced, joyous, and pretty damn delightful.

11. BROKEN BELLS- Mongrel Heart
When Danger Mouse (of Gnarls Barkley) and James Mercer (of The Shins) get together, you know something magical is going to happen. Their long-anticipated debut dropped in March, and offered an unusual indie-pop sound-embodied by the random spaghetti-Western style horn section in this song.

12. MINIATURE TIGERS- The Wolf
Question: What’s the best way to get over a really crappy relationship?
Answer: Do as Miniature Tigers do- write an album full of references to wolves, volcanoes, cannibals- and hit TV show Lost. My personal favourite line comes from the track Cannibal Queen: ‘like Nikki and P you could bury me alive’- I’m sure fellow Losties will appreciate that reference.

You can listen to the whole playlist on the little player in the sidebar, so you can listen whilst you browse. Once a new playlist is made, you'll still be able to listen to the whole on this page. Enjoy!

Playlist 11: Sex

Fergie - London Bridge
Marks must go to Stacey Ferguson (better known as Fergie) for the use of such an original and unusual metaphor. I’m not entirely sure which part of her anatomy she is refering to as the ‘London Bridge’, but I get the jist and I’m pretty sure that she wants some... ‘How come every time you come around my London London bridge wana go down like...wana go down?’

I Want You - Kings of Leon
I have nothing to say other than; ‘A choke and a gag, she spit up and came back for more.’ Lovely.

The Sex Has Made Me Stupid - Robots in Disguise
Nowadays it is impossible to listen to the radio without hearing some chart-topping-horny-rapping-shitty-sexist-male singing about how much he loves to fuck faceless women, so it is refreshing to hear the female voices of Sue and Dee performing a spot of role reversal. ‘Please sir can I have some more, I want you on the floor, get down, GO’. And be quick about it yeah.

Sexyback -Justin Timberlake
I have to admit, I used to have a slight crush on Justin (mainly for his dancing and good looks rather than the music) but he has produced a few gems in his time; ‘Cry Me a River’ and ‘Sexyback’ to name a few. ‘Dirty babe, you see these shackels baby I’m your slave, i’ll let you whip me if I misbehave’... Ooft, how could you say no to that?!

William Powers - The Maccabees
This song is more about lust than sex itself. Orlando Weeks (cool name by the way) sings about the destructive powers of desire, and his struggle to stay faithfull. ‘There is love, there is lust, there is love fuelled lust, and a thing called trust which I must not break, for you.’ Keep it up Orlando.

Bounce -Timbaland
If you like futuristic technology, more half-naked ladies than you can imagine, the teasingly sexy voice of Timbabland behaving like a pimp, and/or sex through a door then the video for this song is the one for you. (Seriously though, door sex? What?). Oh, and Timberlake reeaaally wants a threesome - ‘I got the remedy, it’s you on me, then me on you, then you on her, and y’all on me’ etc.

Sleepyhead - Passion Pit
Again, this song is less obviously about sex, focusing more on the pressure and expectation it brings that the act itself. Passion Pit’s lyrics are what make their songs stand out for me, and this is no exception. ‘They crowd your bedroom like some thoughts wearing thin, against the walls against your rules against your skin’.

Ice Cream - New Young Pony Club
So seeing as this playlist is about sex, I’m ending on a high (literally). This song is basically a lusty Tahita saying ‘Let me give you what you'd like’ over and over again. Well if you can, then why not really. ‘Drink me like a liquor c'mon and dip your dipper, show me what you're here for, guy’. Of course, that’s not all that guys are usefull for...maybe some of them can cook too.

Playlist 11: "Lets Make Beautiful, Beautiful Music Together" said Chloe

So really, anyone fancy a shag?

1. SEXUAL HEALING - Marvin Gaye
Ooof, the sexiest of all sex songs. The smoothness of Marvins voice, the sensuality of the words, the slow, sexy beat in the back all make this one of the best songs to get jiggy too. Gets you in the mood doesn't it?
2. SEXUAL RIOT - The Metros
More about the sordidness of sex, completely juxtaposes all Marvin has just sang about, but I like that. People can be, boyfriend articulately comments to his brother when he stumbles in at 1 in the afternoon, "seedy bastards" and thats the truth of the matter.

3. SEX - The Pipettes
A song about sex, but its beautifully subtle. And thats talking about sex in a nutshell, its taboo, so when they say "rest your pretty head" they sort of mean "take off all your clothes and lets have the sexy time!". Awesome.

4. LETS MAKE LOVE AND LISTEN TO DEATH FROM ABOVE - CSS
CSS, those horny little Brazilians. This song is sexual perfection. They be 'Cansei de Ser Sexy' (tired of being sexy) but they can't bloody help it can they?

5. RUDE BOY - Rihanna
Absolutely love this song, it shows the raunchy side of a female! Plus its a great song to dance to!

6. UNDER THE SHEETS - Ellie Goulding
Mmmm. I love Ellie G. And this song is one of her best known. Its a great track and whilst its not my favourite song she has done, it definitely deserves a mention. Its sexy is what it is.

7. INSIDE IT FEELS ALL THE SAME - Explosions in the Sky
A little instrumental which I think is beautiful. No completely sex related, but the songs brilliant and if you have a dirty mind (like me) the band name might make you chuckle.

Playlist 11: Sex

So, for this month's playlist, we've decided to trawl our music libraries for the very best songs about, umm, sex. It may be a little risque, but it's the subject of alot of very awesome songs. So, here goes nothing:

Playlist 11: Sex Look! Gummy Bear Porn!

1. JULIETTE AND THE LICKS- Hot Kiss
‘Ooh, your little girl wants to f-f-f...’
Because is there any better way to kick off a super-naughty playlist than with the gravelly-voiced Juliette Lewis’ sexual fixation?

WARNING: The content from here on in gets a little blue. Giggidy giggidy.

2. DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979- Sexy Results
‘Woman friend, take me to the bedroom, let me show you how I am full grown’
Because is there anything more dirty than that bass playing? Also: don’t watch the video if you’re easily weirded out-it features a woman who has mouths for nipples. Kind of like in Angela Carter, only that was eyes for nipples. I digress...

3. HOT ACTION COP- Fever 4 Da Flava
‘Do you think that I get some, chicky chicky, maybe just a little finger sticky sticky’
Because as depraved as the lyrics may be, this is fast becoming one of my favourite songs of all time. And because it was on the soundtracks for ‘Grind’ AND ‘American Pie 3’- y’know, the one with the wedding, where Stifler eats dog poop. God, those films are classy.

4. BIKINI KILL- Anti-Pleasure Dissertation
‘How punk-fucking-rock my pussy smelt’
Because the lyrics are ridiculously vaginal. And (more than) slightly off-putting, but very, very sexual.

5. MELODY GARDOT- Lover Undercover
‘Come to your lover undercover and I will turn your mood around’
Because despite the song being about having a secret saucy affair, Melody Gardot still manages to keep everything PC and above-board. She’s a classy dame, with an incredible voice.

6. THE DARK HORSE PROJECT- Dark Horse
‘You want it and you ride and you ride and you ride your way out of me’
Because this song is so sensual, and so underestimated. I truly love it- and it has such filthy undertones, I kind of want to blush.

7. SOHO DOLLS- Stripper
‘You get me girl when you're nervous and when your hand is in the thong.’
Because who can resist a little bit of lady-lovin’ from everyone’s favourite kinky burlesque group (so-called because the lead singer gets her tits out all the time). WARNING: the spoken-word in this song will make you feel like you called an upmarket Soho sex hotline. Seriously.

8. FUCKED UP- He’s So Frisky
'He's frisky for you!'
Because the only thing that could possibly make this pop classic (originally by Dolly Mixture) any better is if it were sang by a big hairy man. Wish granted.

9. BRAZILIAN GIRLS- Don’t Stop
‘Don’t stop, just keep on going, until I come’
Because it’s so filthy, yet so beautifully sung. Oh Brazilian Girls- I never know whether to be in awe or slightly uncomfortable.

10. HEAD AUTOMATICA- Cannibal Girl
‘Cannibal girl, you’ve been eating me alive.’
Because it’s important to remember sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing. Like when you get second-degree burns on your Johnson, for instance. You may also find interesting to know that I have a recurring dream where I do a weird suggestive tap dance to this song.

11. THE DONNAS- Take It Off
‘Stop staring at my D-Cup; don’t waste time, just give it to me’
Because I don’t care if they hardly ever receive any good press, I freakin’ love The Donnas. I get the whole ‘harking back to the Golden Age of rock n’ roll’ thing, I do. Sex seemed to be alot more prolific then.

12. STARS- The First 5 Times
‘Now I’ve got to ask you more one thing: keep doing that forever’
Because sometimes sex and love get caught up in one glorious, snuggly mess. Aaw.

13. THE BEATLES-Come Together
‘Hold you in his arms yeah you can feel his disease’.
Because it’s THE SEXIEST SONG OF ALL TIME. It properly gets me every time- that month or so where this song was on every advert for ‘Beatles Rock Band’ was not a good time for me. If you want to seduce me, stand outside my window playing this. I fully give my guarantee I’ll throw myself naked out of my window at you.
DISCLAIMER: This is unlikely, for health and safety reasons.

I’m having a few internet problems, but I’ll try and get a listenable version of this whole playlist up soon, so you enjoy it all, preferably with a lover ;)

Playlist 10: Spring, Part 4 - Charles

My definition of Spring: Who gives a shit? It's like summer but not even as good.

of Montreal - Springtime is the Season
Springtime is the season, ladies and gentlemen, and what better way of saying than through some old school lo-fi of Montreal, that'll never fail to put a smile on your face.

Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love
"Anything is possible" indeed. A feel good song that makes you just wanna jump up out of hibernation and be like "fuck yeah! It's springtime!" Maybe.

Jónsi & Alex - All The Big Trees
You can almost track Jónsi's musical career through seasons; back in the old days of Von, ( ) and the weird baby album whose name I cannot pronounce, it was winter; the music was dark and cold. Jónsi's new album sounds like summer itself, with Jónsi himself describing it as "playful" and "colourful". This leaves Jónsi and Alex wonderfully in the middle, with this beautiful ambient album that could only be spring.

Antony and the Johnsons - Daylight and the Sun
"I cry for daylight and the sun" croons Antony as the raw piano breaks through that thick cloud to show sunshine for the first time this year. Or something like that.

Stuart Murdoch - Another Saturday
Based on the melody from an old folk song, Another Saturday is that lazy song for when you really can't be arsed to go outside, cos the sun just ain't shinin' yet.

Converge - Jane Doe
Nothing says spring like the wailing of "I want out" between frantic screams and punk guitars.

Playlist 10: Spring, Part 3 - Tri

My definition of spring: A time of the year when the moon starts to lose and the sun stays out for longer each day. Basically, it’s just about the end of winter and just about time for summer, which is why all of the songs on this playlist are ones that make me feel happy and remind me of that feeling when you wake up in the morning with the sun coming through the window, and you just have to smile to yourself. Just a little.

The Roadside – Tunng

I must admit, my many attempts to work out the meaning of these lyrics have failed epically, and I’m pretty sure it’s talking of some unpleasant deeds by ‘The Roadside’ – ‘You should stop worrying, then they waded naked into the water, mmmm’. Very strange! But the pretty pretty music and the mixture of male/female voices makes me like it even so.

Colourful Life – Cajun Dance Party

Oh I'd love to go to a brand new place but recognise the sky’. I like that line. It’s wierd to think that everywhere in the world, wherever you go, it will always be the same sky, same moon, same sun, and stars. Makes the world seem smaller somehow.

I Declare A Ceasefire – My Latest Novel

Although some people believe the lyrics should be taken literally and applied to war, my interpretation is that this song is about letting go of the past or old grudges and starting afresh, which is what made me think to put it in a Spring playlist. The smooth Scottish accent of Chris Deveney presents the lyrics in a believable way that’s nothing but pleasing to the ear. (But I may be biased; I have a soft spot for Scots.) ‘Please put down your guns, lower your weapons, oh I declare a change of heart.'

Glass Houses – Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

It’s been a while since Get Cape. has appeared on my playlists, but this song never fails to make me smile, probably because of the layered harmonies, random trumpet playing and questioning lyrics; ‘Isn’t it infantile to consider yourself the judge of someone's rights, to a better life?

See Me Through – Ida Maria

Ok, so this song strays away from the theme of happy and uplifting, but the way Ida Maria’s voice struggles and strains as the song progresses reminds me of the sun pushing its light through dappled trees – picture a forest in spring with the sun rising all around you and you’ll know what I mean. (Or just think I’m weird, either one =). ‘Oh God, I can't believe in you just because I'm afraid you're true’. Beautiful.

Feeling A Moment – Feeder

A Golden Oldie. Well really, it’s not all that old (the album 'Pushing the Senses' was released in 2004), it just seems like longer. 'Feeling a Moment' is one of those songs where the lyrics don’t match the mood of the music, but you can’t help loving it anyway. ‘How do you feel when there’s no sun, how will you be when rainclouds come and pull you down again.

E Is For Estranged – Owen Pallet

If I was to describe this song in one word it would have to be ‘magical’ - an enchanting combination of strings, piano and voice that echoes sunny days and oozes with pure genius.

Morning Sun – Robbie Williams

Robbie Williams is not an artist that I would normally listen to, but this song reaches above his previously over-produced, unimaginatively dull singles such as Rudebox (or whatever the hell that was called). ‘Morning Sun’ combines the most honest lyrics to come from Robbie in a long time, with an unusual but effective harmonica solo. Criticise me all you want, but I like this song. ‘How do you rate the morning sun, it's just too heavy for me.

Time and Space - The Accidental

Right, it’s finally the end of Spring Playlist number 3, and despite having some of the most cheesy lyrics and most clichéd rhymes, this song really summarises the feeling and meaning of spring for me – ‘Time and space stretch out before you, and the universe implores you, to take your place amongst all things...you are part of everything’.

Playlist 10: Spring, Part 2- Chloe

My turn! My turn! My turn!

1. Magic Weather - Alessi's Ark
"And sleep with an umbrella, the freedom's there- I can depend on magic weather"
As you have probably already concurred, I'm a massive Alessi's Ark fan and I think the title of this song just encapsulates springtime. It is magic weather, dancing between winter and summer and highly unpredictable.

2. The Nature of Daylight- Mark Richter
This song is completely instrumental so there are no lyrics. It got a real melancholy tune to it and because of the title, i can just imagine a ray of sunlight coyly peaking from behind a cloud. That's what made me choose it. It's a beautiful song. The man behind the music is Mark Richter, a German composer has worked with the BBC's Philharmonic Orchestra. Get him!

3. Over The Hill - Alessi's Ark
"We feed the ducks in the local park and eat ice cream, get all jittery, not from the sugar itself, but from what you do to me"
Spring is about renewal and rebirth and that's why i picked 'Over The Hill', its all about new relationships. Plus, the imagery of her feeding the ducks in the park takes me back to my childhood and before you say "no one eats ice cream in March", talk to our ice cream man Pete, who is already doing the rounds!

4. The First Days of Spring - Noah and the Whale
"Its the first day of spring, and my life is starting over again"
Again, there is that thought of life changing, just like the seasons. Noah and the Whale were featured recently as our 'Song of the Day' which you should check out if you like this song. This song is all about love lost and yearning for them back, its bittersweet and lovely. Enjoy.

5. Blow Away - A Fine Frenzy
"Its the ride we take, many winged escape, its the bough we break to blow away"
The lyrics are subtle, but if you listen carefully there is some beautiful nature imagery running throughout the whole of this song. Plus, its a bit bouncier and happy-go-lucky, mix that with A Fine Frenzy's beautiful vocals and you have a song to make you feel happy about the world. And why shouldn't you? The good weathers finally here!

6. Strawberry Swing - Coldplay
"Cold water, cold water what do you say? Its such a perfect, its such a prefect day"
Its the melody that makes this one for me. That spirited drumming and the merry guitar rifts. Its just spring in a nutshell. Bright, breezy and full of life! Plus, I want to see people duke it out on the comments. Coldplay fans or not? I think they are prefection and would quite happy make fruity-named babies with Chris Martin. I'd make enough for a whole fucking fruit basket!

7. Early Spring Till - The Wheel
"Are you tired? Do you feel wrung out? Have you fallen from where glory sprouts?"
Melancholic lyrics with soothing beats. A contradiction to my previous songs which associate bouncy happy tunes with spring and nature. But this song is so beautiful it just has to be included and nature is beautiful. Its a somewhat strenuous link, apart from the name of course, but this song is worth a listen, so I'll be a rebel and include it anyway.

Playlist 10: Spring, Part I- Eileen

It's playlist time, bitches!
The most amazing thing happened this morning- as I opened my eyes, I was greeted with golden light shining softly through my curtains. And it was warm! It seems the very second March started, it brought spring with it, which is awesome because I'm sick of the snow. So, to celebrates all things spring-like, may I introduce you to:

Playlist 10- Spring and NatureSome songs to get you in the mood for warmer weather and longer days

1. CHAD VAN GAALEN- Willow Tree
A supremely talented Canadian crooner, who even makes some of the multitudinous instruments he plays, which is pretty damn rad. I have absolutely no idea why this song was the first to pop into my head when I thought of spring- it’s about death, the very antonym of the meaning of spring. Still, it has that peaceful, melancholic tone that sums up spring for me.

2. PEARL AND THE PUPPETS- Mango Tree
There’s nothing massively complex or profound about this song- it’s simply a charming melody, slightly wispy Scottish vocals and a massive dose of sunshine. Yet for all of its catchiness, there is still something delicate and full of promise in there- lovely jubbly.

3. ATLAS SOUND- An Orchid
After having our spirits lifted by Pearl, we plunge straight back into the pensive and melancholy with Atlas Sound. From ‘Logos’, one of my favourite experimental albums of last year, ‘An Orchid’ is rich is shadows and echoes, and sounds slightly like a spectral lullaby, which for me makes it all the more enjoyable.

4. EISLEY- Trolley Wood
For some reason, this song always reminds me of when me and my friend from primary school got lost in the woods, and found a fallen oak, the roots of which looked exactly like a triceratops. I have no idea why that memory popped into my head, but there you go. Contemplate that whilst listening to the exquisite harmonies of Eisley.
FUN FACT TIME! As well as being a talented musician, Sherri Du Pree of Eisley is also a really gifted photographer. Check out her stuff here >>>

5. DREDG- Planting Seeds
‘Look what I’ve found, a seashell in a sea of shells’- nothing like a good bit of dredg to get you feeling jaded about life in the season of birth. Aah.

6. HEADLESS HEROES- The North Wind Blew South
Headless Hero’s revitalise this tune from the 1970’s by adding a gorgeous, uplifting string section. A song to get inspired to.

7. BELLE AND SEBASTIAN- Mayfly
Mayfly tells the tale of a sunny romance with a girl who is second best, and the inevitable heartbreak she feels. A little depressing again, but it bears this line; ‘Your diary’s looking like a Bible with its verses lost in time’, which is exquisite, so I think we can forgive a little heartbreak.

8. TELEKINESIS- Great Lakes
A track from the marvellous self-titled album released last year, which narrowly missed out on my Top 10 Favourite Albums of the Year. Another quite pensive, melancholic ditty- I’ll cheer up soon, I promise.

9. STUDENT FILM- A Rainy Spring Day in New York
A song to remind you that it’s not all sunshine and happiness from here on in- there’s still rain (and April Showers) to contend with. Oh, and it’s also a CHOON.

10. FRONTIER RUCKUS- Spring Terror Nerves of the Night Mind
I absolutely adore the gently undulating melody, and ups and downs of the vocals- a song to be savoured. Sit back, close your eyes, fall in love.

You can now listen to the whole playlist below- enjoy!

Playlist 9: Love Songs Part 3 - Chloe

1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2
"I have climbed highest mountains, I have run through the fields, only to be with you"
In my mind, this is perhaps one of the greatest love songs of all time and not only because its appears in the opening scene of "The Runaway Bride" when Julia Roberts gallops off on that horse, wedding dress flapping in the wind, although that has a lot to do with it, I fucking love that movie. This is a song about striving for that special someone, that person you would do anything and go anywhere for. U2 have always had an brilliant knack for writing heartfelt love ballads, but this is definitely the best.

2. Breathe Me - Sia
"Be my friend, hold me, wrap me up, unfold me, I am small and needy, warm me up and breathe me"
Sia's vocals, with her beautifully soft tones which melts like butter, have always induced that gushy love feeling inside me, combine that the slow dulcet piano that plays throughout the song and the violins that slide effortlessly in halfway through and you've got a ballad for the ages. 'Breathe Me' is a song you want to wrap yourself up in, about the human feeling to be wanted and cared for, I think we can identify.

3. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
"And if a double-decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die"
A double-decker bus, a ten tonne truck crashing into the protagonist? Call that romantic, some people might say. It's a strange concept, I agree. But there's something Romeo and Juliet-esque about this song; not being afraid to die if its beside the one you love. The song, in true Smiths styley is a depressing one, but you can not argue it's not romantic. Even in death, there is a light that never goes out.

4. Destiny - Zero 7
"When I'm weak I draw strength from you, and when you're lost I know how to change your mood, and when I'm down you breathe life into me, even though we're miles apart we are each others destiny"
Now, this song, has sentimental value to me and that's perhaps why its made it onto this playlist. There are a hundred different songs which would explain love better, but nearly two years ago I was introduced to 'Destiny' by Zero 7 at my cousins wedding as it was chosen as the music for their first dance. There was so much love there, in their eyes and expressions as they slow danced that there is no way this could not make its way onto this list.

5. Strange and Beautiful - Aqualung
"I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, and I've been secretly falling apart, unseen"
Because not all love is requited. 'Strange and Beautiful' is about those people you see, those who steal your heart but don't realise you exist. In a none creepy stalker fashion, of course!

6. Here with me - Dido
"And I won't go, I won't sleep, I can't breathe, until you're resting here with me"
And again, another song about when love stories don't end like the movies. Not all love works out and this song is a beautiful recount of heartbreak. Twinned with the innocence of Dido's vocals, these words seem all the more bittersweet.

7. Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
"A moment, a love, a dream, a lie, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs"
The lyric above pretty much spells out a relationship for me in small, bitesize, musically-beautiful chunks. The lead singer of The Temper Trap Dougie Mandagi's voice is angelic and this song just rings of lovey-doveyness. And it just makes me happy, ok!

8. Constellations - Alessi's Ark
"If your body is the sky, then your freckles are the constellations"
(Squeals a little bit as she is going to see them and then composes herself) This song is actually beautiful. The lyrics "Hell I'm in love with you, my branches they turn to you, asking me if you love me too" are both adorable but vulnerable. Telling someone your feelings in a fragile place to be and this song captures that perfectly. However, unfortunately I could gain a copy of this for the ipod.

Playlist 9: Love Songs, Part 2 - Charles

1. Elbow - Starlings.
I could easily have chosen 'One Day Like This' and blabbered on about how the song is an "anthem for our generation" or whatever, but when it comes to love you don't care about that shit. A love song is a song for two people (three, if you're lucky). It should say "this is our song, and the rest of the world can go fuck themselves." I'd like to think that's what it's all about, anyway.

2. The National - Fake Empire.
"We're half awake in our fake empire" croons Matt Berninger, vocalist of the very mellow The National. As this song crescendos with intensity with guitar hooks and trumpet swirls, you just want to close your eyes and wake up to a Fake Empire of your own.

3. Antony and the Johnsons - Crazy in Love (Beyoncé cover).
The original might be a stroke of genius, but it's not particularly... moving. Antony has promptly changed all that with his spine-tinglingly beautiful rendition. As long as you're not too weirded out by his haunting (read: creepy) voice whilst getting down to it, then it's pretty much perfect. The other option is the cheap laughs that can be had out of Antony pronouncing every specific word: "got me hoping you'll page me right now." Brilliant.

4. Radiohead - True Love Waits.
It's typical of Radiohead to not even record a proper version of what is probably their best piece of work to date. Thom's fragile pleas are surely enough to provoke raw emotion from even the most soulless among us ("True love waits in haunted attics/And true love lives on lollipops and crisps"). It's a song of longing, intimacy, and classic Thom-weirdness: Everything you want from a true romance.

5. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Everything With You.
The entirety of TPOBPAH's début album makes me happy. 'Everything With You' is no exception. It makes me realise that I'm young, carefree, and that - somewhere in the world - some people are in love. And, call me a romantic, but something about that inspires me.

6. She & Him - I Was Made For You.
In my dreams Zooey Deschanel is singing this song to me, not Ben Gibbard. It seems all you need to score hot chicks now is musical talent and ridiculous sideburns. Gibbard beats me on both counts.

7. Dave Sitek - With A Girl Like You (The Troggs cover).
Maybe it's the slow tempo, or the "bah bah bah bah bahs" of trumpets, but Dave Sitek has made this song a damn sight sexier than the original. The lyrics of total avoidance of what he actually wants to say are what makes this song so cute - it's not some film bullshit, this song shows real love.

8. Sufjan Stevens - To Be Alone With You.
So, it's a song about Jesus. Maybe. But only if you want it to be. Make your own sexual euphemisms for the "you went up on a tree" line, but despite what Sufjan may have written this about, I've got my own interpretations. This is my favourite gay love song of all time.

9. Bright Eyes - Lua.
When I thought of Bright Eyes, the first love song I thought of was 'The First Day of My Life'. So naturally, I completely disregarded this and chose something else instead. Just as honest as 'The First Day of My Life', 'Lua' depicts a troubled relationship - "I know you have a heavy heart, I can feel it when we kiss" - but that's life. It's not all plain sailing, and it's comforting to know that everyone goes through shit, even Conor Oberst.

10. The Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love.
I could have chosen any song on the aptly named 69 Love Songs, but this one seems to speak out a little bit more than the others. Peter Gabriel released a beautiful cover on his new album Scratch Your Back, but there's only so much orchestras can do. Sometimes, for all the grand arrangements money can buy, all you really want is a man with a really deep voice to sing an honest song to you. Love is simple, close, intimate, and it doesn't get much more personal than this.

Playlist 9: Love Songs, Part 1- Eileen

Since Valentine's Day is looming on the horizon, we thought we'd each share our favorite love songs with you, to woo your fair maiden/ handsome knight, or just so you can bask in their general loveliness. Up first, Eileen:

Playlist 9.1- Love Songs
Here's one for the lovers ;)

1. THE CURE- Just Like Heaven
‘I promise that I’ll run away with you’.
Not only one of my favourite love songs of all time, but one of my general favourite songs of all time. The classic tale of girl meets boy, girl and boy fall in love, boy doesn’t show it and girl’s too insecure to realise he loves her. Heartbreaking, beautiful, a classic.

2. YEAH YEAH YEAHS- Modern Romance
‘This is no- and there is no- modern romance’
I think what makes this song so touching for me is Karen O’s voice. Modern Romance is from ‘Fever to Tell’- an album in which she is frequently heard hysterically screaming and shouting, in a way only she can. So, when she comes out with vocals like this- soft, raw- it adds to wonderful honesty of the song.

3. BON IVER- Skinny Love
‘Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?’
Because not all great romances work out. I suppose that’s the beauty of love- its fragility. What makes a good love song for me is that gentleness and tenderness- big, overblown romantic statements with belted vocals and a full orchestra don’t seem to have the same sincerity as a guy, and a guitar, and something real to say...

4. SAY ANYTHING- Alive With the Glory of Love
'When I watch you, I wanna do you right where you're standing.'
... Having said that, here’s a big overblown love song. I can’t help myself- with lyrics as honest as this, who can’t fall in love with this song? I guess it’s the musical equivalent of ‘The Naked Man’.

5. THE BEACH BOYS- Wouldn’t It Be Nice?
'It seems the more we talk about it, it only makes it worse to leave without it'.
The love song for every teenager, who wish instead of waking up to a cold cup of tea and nagging from your parents, you could wake up beside the one you love. Aaw.

6. REGINA SPEKTOR- Samson
'I cut his hair myself one night, a pair of dull scissors in the yellow light...'
Spektor has several times rewritten biblical or mythological stories, such as Oedipus. In Samson, Spektor doesn’t see a story of betrayal, but a love story- and it’s a story she narrates beautifully.

7. CAT POWER- Sea of Love
'Come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love'.
I remember my grandparents dancing to the original song when I was a kid, and Marshall does a pretty good job of filling this cover with just as much sincerity as the original. Lovely.

8. CITY AND COLOUR- Casey’s Song
'With you on my mind and my heart held in your hands, screaming: 'Break Me'.'
Ok, so I thought I’d round up with pretty much my favourite song ever. There’s something in the simplicity of it- the exquisite tone of Dallas Green’s voice, the beautifully-played guitar- that gets me every time.

10 Songs of the Week

I'm getting worse and worse for posting, though not through choice. I've only been back at college for a week, and I'm already bogged down with essays and reading lists and all sorts. I guess this is sort of one of those years where I have to work, lest I risk messing up my future.
Ho hum, enough with the negative stuff- how have you all been? All slowly getting back into the swing of things after the holidays, I suspect. I'm having a bit of a musical week, by which I'm meaning to shitloads of music, not that I'm rockin' out to the Sound of Music, or anything. So, I thought it would be nice to share with you what's goin' on musically with me as of late:

THE WHO, 'BABA O' RILEY'
'Who's Next' has easily one of the best album covers of all time, and is one of the best albums of all time as well. Baba O'Riley is very, very high up on my list of ultimate tracks to play air guitar to alone in my bedroom. The Who also provide all of the theme tunes for CSI, and I do love a good bit of CSI.

MARIANA'S TRENCH, 'ACADIA' I just remembered the guitar solo on 'Acadia' reminds me of 'Baba O' Riley', for some strange reason. I still don't think 'Masterpiece Theatre' is a patch on 'Fix Me', but they're still seem like a pretty cool bunch of dudes, so ho hum.

ALEXISONFIRE, ANYTHING, EVERYTHING, JUST GIVE ME ALEXISONFIRE QUICK!
(BUT MAINLY 'THIS COULD BE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD')
I'm going to see them in concert in October! Win! I also like to imagine what would happen if Alexisonfire and Marianas Trench got into some Canadian-rock-band-battle-to-the-death. Alexisonfire would easily win- it would be a bit of a massacre, actually. Any member of Alexisonfire could snap the rather effeminate Josh Ramsay (lead singer of MT) like a twig. No offence to Josh- he just seems like he'd benefit from a good square meal.

CITY AND COLOUR, 'AS MUCH AS I EVER COULD'
My Alexisonfire binge just sort of merged into a City and Colour binge. I think I gravely underestimated 'As Much As I Ever Could' in particular.

THE CURE, 'JUST LIKE HEAVEN'
Ooh, I love The Cure. It is a pity that all decent bands from England have been and gone, though. Our music scene is a little lacking in comparison at the moment.

NEKO CASE, 'PRISON GIRLS'
'Middle Cyclone', the album this song is from is easily my favorite of the albums that I reviewed on Song by Song. All of the songs are also alot of fun to sing along to, particularly 'People Got a Lotta Nerve'- on the count of three, 'I'm a man-man-man, man-man-man-eater!'

THE BEATLES, 'PAPERBACK WRITER'
You may notice an old-English-band theme to my current musical taste. I don't know, maybe I'm going to patriotic. For some reason, there's this massive taboo about people listening to '1'- what, just because it's basically a compilation of their famous songs, I'm not allowed to listen to it?

BAT FOR LASHES, 'MOON AND MOON'
Since viewing her performance at the Mercury Prize Awards, I can't stop listening to her. Her strangely hypnotic voice gets me every time.

AS CITIES BURN, 'PETTY'
Still my album of the year thus far. Truly stunning. Enough said.

JOY DIVISION, 'LOVE WILL TEAR US APART'
A truly immense song. Have you watched 'Control', the biopic about them? That too is immense, and so visually beautiful. Go buy it, now.
